It’s a known fact that periodontitis, a bacterial infection in the mouth is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults. According to the American Dental Association, an estimated 75% of all Americans over the age of 35 have some form of periodontal disease.
Your dentist and/or hygienist may perform the ORALDNA Labs tests for one or more of the following reasons:
• Clinical signs of infection are present
Inflamed gum tissue (red, swollen, or bleeding gums)
• Visible signs of periodontitis are evident
-Bone loss around teeth, periodontal pockets
• You have a family history of periodontal disease
• Confirmation of your oral health is necessary prior to surgery
• You have medical /systemic conditions that make you more susceptible to periodontal infections
• As a screening tool to assess your periodontal health and genetic risk to oral infections
As you may be aware, the past 10 years have provided much insight into what has come to be called... "The Oral / Systemic Connection". There does appear to be a link to chronic inflammatory periodontal infections and systemic diseases such as:
Heart disease
Diabetes
Stroke
Some forms of cancer and other diseases
